The prior provincial, Sergio Sanchez, regarding the 127th Provincial Chapter: “the chapter gives what the chapter gets”
18-02-2018 España
The 127th Provincial Chapter of the Province of Saint Nicholas of Tolentine is scheduled to begin on May 14 in Marcilla (Navarra, Spain). Three months prior to the beginning of the Chapter, the prior provincial has sent a protocol letter to all the brothers, asking us to collaborate with reflection and ideas if we want this Chapter to be truly fruitful. The Augustinian-Recollect Family is called to prayer and to join spiritually in this moment of renovation and merger.

Even though provincial chapters are always of mayor importance for the life of the religious community, this one presents a special feature that makes it more significant. In fact, it will be during this Chapter that the two provinces, Saint Nicholas of Tolentine and Saint Augustine, will officially merge into one province of the Order.

There are already some proposals to study, dealing with the objectives that the Chapter should pursue for the period 2018-2021. The focus will be on the union of the two provinces: to promote the communion between persons and communities, to rationalize the assignments and the ministries, to create meeting areas in order to strengthen the idea of a united community and to concentrate on the same objectives.

These are some of the ideas that the prior provincial reflects in his letter:

“Three months prior to the celebration of the 127th Provincial Chapter, I invite all the religious to intensify the preparation for it. Let us be accomplices of the Holy Spirit, instruments to build his Kingdom, consecrated to live in community, and missionary disciples for the joy of the Gospel.

A Chapter is a time of grace, communion and discernment, in which we can bring together what the Holy Spirit has inspired to the brothers, identify the current challenges and look for specific solutions and answers. Let us collaborate with the Holy Spirit to see beyond ourselves and sense a horizon full of hope and life.

[…] I invite and encourage all the religious to do their share in addressing the concrete reality they are living. We could say: The Chapter gives what the chapter gets; what do you expect from the provincial chapter?

[…] As men of faith, let us ask our Lord for guidance to know what he wants from us; a trusting and constant prayer always receives an answer. […] Let us pray him to give us a heart to search for communion and unity, and a strong drive to build it; it is the communion that made possible for so many to live in unanimity and harmony before God.

During this lenten season, the Lord summons us to a personal, community and pastoral conversion; an urgency to put away the focus on ourselves, and to discern what the Province can contribute to society and the church.

We commend this task of ours to Our Mother of Consolation, Saint Augustine and Saint Nicholas of Tolentine, our patrons.
