"I want to be a priest, bringing mercy, a friendly word, to the streets, sharing faith and hope to the example of the Inner Teacher"
The Augustinian Recollect Jorge Luis Quirós Oviedo (Tejar del Guarco, Cartago, Costa Rica, 1988)received the 20th of July the presbyterate in a ceremony presided over by the Augustinian RecollectAngel San Casimiro, Bishop Emeritus of Alajuela (Costa Rica) in the facilities of the sports center of “Ciudad de los Ninos”, socio-educational project of the Recollects in Agua Caliente ofCartago .
The ceremony was very well attended and the sports center was absolutely filled with members of the new priest's family, friends, members of the Augustinian-Recollect Family in the country: religious from the Augustinian-Recollect communities, members of the Lay Fraternities of the “Ciurdad de los Ninos” and from Pozos de Santa Ana — San Antonio de Belén, members of the Augustinian-Recollect Youth,youth in vocation discernment, aspirants and Postulants, and membersof the “Ciudad de los Niño’s educational community...
Together with the Recollect Bishop San Casimiro, MarioEnrique Quirós, Bishop of Cartago concelebrated. Nineteen priests accompanied the new priest and gave him the traditional welcome embrace of the presbytery.
The ceremony began with a particularly emotional moment, when Friar Jorge’s parents gave him their blessing as a symbol of his son's total dedication to the service of the church. The rite of introduction and acceptance of the candidate into the presbyterate followed.
San Casimiro thanked Jorge's family for their generosity to the Church, while inviting him to mentally go over and thank those who throughout his life have influenced his vocational process, discernment and formation.
The bishop presented to the people Jorge as a charismatic young man, humble andfull of joy, and asked the still candidate for the priesthood to live his ministry consistently, since it will bea challengingcall.
After the homily, Jorge publicly committed himself to the community by the service of God's people. During the Litany of the Saints, he prostrated and in prayer askedfor the intercession of the saints, and received by the laying on of hands from the Bishop and of all the priests present, together with the consecratory prayerthat made him a priest of the Catholic Church and theanointing of hands.
Dressed with priestly garments, he received from the bishop the Book of Gospelsas a symbol of the proclamation of the Word and the paten and the chalice as a symbol of the Eucharist.
After the final thanks, which included messages sent by the prior provincial of the Province of San Nicolás de Tolentino and the Prior General of the Order of Augustinians Recollects, Miguel Miró, the vicar for Mexico and Costa Rica announced Jorge's next destination at the San Augustin Formation House in Mexico City.So far, Jorge had served in the Amazons in Brazilduring the last stage of his initial formation, a year of community and pastoral integration.
For his part, Jorge greeted all the attendees, thanked them for accompanying him on this day and began his words with a phrase from St Augustine. He shared special memories of his family, his formators and his Augustinian brothers.
Jorge recalled to the audience the words his father told him when he announced that he wanted to enter the seminary: "Son, if you choose that path you will serve and not beserved." He therefore continued:
"I want to be an instrument of the Church, I want to be another Christ not only at the altar, but bringing His mercy to the streets, with a friendly word, sharing the faith and hope to the example of the inner teacher. I am happy and my happiness is to do God's will and I want to share it with you."
At the end of the Eucharist, the hymn to St Augustine was intoned and everyone enjoyed following an agape offered by the Augustinian-recollect community of the Ciudad de los Niño’sso that everyone would have the opportunity to congratulate the new Priest. Then the lunch took place, enlivened by a musical group of students from the “Ciudad de los Niño’s, followed by much joy and celebration.
The next day, Sunday, Jorge celebrated his first Eucharist in the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception in Tejar del Guarco, located just fivekilometers from la Ciudad de los Niño’s,accompanied by his family and countrymen.
