Spiritual Exercises for the Augustinian Recollect Friars of the USA in Oxnard (California)
After the last provincial chapter in which the provinces of St. Augustine and St. Nicholas became one, the first spiritual retreat in the United States took place in October of 2018. This year’s English retreat started on the 20th and ended the 24thof the May.
Seventeen friars lived this experience, most of them from St. Augustine Priory in Oxnard, others came from Cristo Rey Parish in Los Angeles, CA; Our Lady of Pilar and Guadalupe in Santa Ana, CA; St. Benedict’s in Montebello, CA; St. Anthony’s in Anthony, NM; St. Nicholas Monastery in Union City, NJ; and from Tagaste Monastery in Suffern, NY.
The spiritual exercises has a complete guide prepared by the Revitalization Team of the Order of Augustinian Recollects, and it comes with bible and Augustinian texts to reflect on the theme for this year which was “The Beloved” taken from the Gospel of St. John. Fr. Lauro Larlar as the facilitator, gave two very profound introductions, one in the morning and the second one in the afternoon, for each participant to ponder during the large amount of time offered in the schedule for prayer and meditation.
Time was well spent in meditating the Word of God through the practice of Lectio Divina, and also for gathering many times daily in the chapel to pray all the liturgy of hours, Holy Mass, Holy Hour, Confessions, and prayer of the Holy Rosary.
The schedule for daily mass was planned to have a different presider and homilists each day. Each day a different intention was present in the participants´ prayers: Benefactors, vocations, deceased recollect brothers, and the missions.
The Provincial Vicar, Marlon Beof, visited the participants in the exercises, and some went to the Nursing Home to visit two sick people in the center: James Brown and Veda Rubio.
