Meeting of the prior provincial with Cardinal Dolan about the future of Suffern community
Fr. Sergio Sanchez, prior provincial of St. Nicholas Province, accompanied by Fr. Benjamin Miguélez, provincial secretary, arrived at Tagaste Monastery in Suffern (NY) on Wednesday, October 24, 2018, for a two-day fraternal visit.
Arriving at the same time were Frs. Marlon Beof, vicar provincial, and Fredric Abiera, vice prior and prefect of students at St. Augustine Priory in Oxnard, CA.
They were greeted by Frs. John Gruben, prior, and community members John Oldfield, Charles Huse, and Fidel Hernández.
All gathered for a community meeting with Fr. Provincial who detailed aspects of the Life and Mission Project after which community members shared their personal feelings about recent developments in the Order and the province.
After a lunch break all reassembled for an afternoon meeting with architect Paul Checco to discuss the Building Condition Survey of Tagaste with its various options regarding renewal/replacement of the monastery building.
The following day, Thursday, October 25, began with a midmorning meeting with Cardinal Timothy Dolan, Archbishop of New York. Frs. Sergio, John, and Marlon were received by the Cardinal at St. Joseph Seminary in Yonkers, NY.
The Cardinal expressed his gratitude for the presence and work of the Recollects in Suffern, and was enthusiastic and supportive regarding the future of Tagaste.
The Cardinal and Provincial had an animated conversation in Italian in which they discussed possible future ministry in the Suffern area.
After returning from the meeting with the Cardinal, everyone went for a visit and a prayer for our deceased brothers at the community plot at Ascension Cemetery in Monsey, NY.
Afterward, the Provincial met individually with the members of the local community before leaving in the late afternoon for St. Nicholas Monastery in Union City, NJ.
