Last August, beneficiaries of the Augustinian Recollects’ educational and social center in Costa Rica were able to participate in training and activities that complemented the regular curriculum, but with a sense of holistic education.
Political influence and participation
Tenth- and eleventh-grade students from the Boys’ Town participated in the “Youth Parliament 2025.” Fifty students from 13 schools in the country’s seven provinces visited the Legislative Assembly, the Judiciary, the Supreme Electoral Tribunal, the Jade Museum, and the National Museum.
They participated in conferences on the role of grassroots initiatives in democracy and in a mock parliamentary session in which they drafted, presented, and voted on eleven legislative initiatives. They were able to gain firsthand knowledge of the practices and procedures of parliamentary political negotiation and strengthen their own youth leadership.
“Youth Parliament” is an initiative of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation in collaboration with the Department of Citizen Participation and Costa Rican Parliament member Jason Valverde.
Sports for everyone
Throughout the month of August, sports championships have been organized, as sport provides health and fun, teamwork is experienced, and many other values are practiced with varied physical, emotional, and spiritual benefits.
This has also been reflected outside the institution, at the national level, with participation in the National Taekwondo Championships with very good results: two national champions, three runners-up, and one third place.
Augustinian and vocational August
The Augustinian festivities filled the Boys’ Town with visitors, friends and members of the Augustinian-Recollect Family to pay tribute to the principal saints of this religious family and to live their charisma and spirituality with joy and determination.
The Augustinian month began with a Vocation Week, with a program full of reflection and fraternity, this year with the motto “The hope of a vocation does not disappoint.” It began on Sunday, August 3, with a Eucharist in which special prayers for vocations were offered.
The rest of the week, a space for recreation, games, and socializing was available to reinforce the values of fraternity and joy. On Wednesday the 6th, a Vocational Coffee was held to share, discuss, and learn about diverse life stories. On Thursday the 7th, the entries in the competition proposed by the Coexistence Area were presented. The prizes were awarded the following day at the Vocational Forum. This was followed by a film forum on dreams and their achievement through a life journey.
During this Vocation Week, Sister Martina Martínez of the Missionary Servants of Christ the King, Henry Quirós, the singer Allan Campos, and the Augustinian Recollect Randy Josué Campos collaborated in a special way.
