Alphonse & Eloy Gallegos

On the 20th of February Bishop Alfonso Gallegos (1931-1991) would have turned 93 years old if a fatal traffic accident would not ended his life unexpectedly and prematurely. Today he is walking to the altars and his memory and testimony remains alive among many.

Last Tuesday, February 20th, at Holy Family Church in Union City, New Jersey, USA, there was a Mass to commemorate what would have been the birthday of the Venerable Bishop Alphonse Gallegos, Augustinian Recollect.

He would have turned 93 years old. On February 20, 1931, Bishop Gallegos was born along with his twin brother, Eloy, in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Fray Eliseo González, Vice Postulator of the cause of Gallegos, presided over the Eucharist at 7pm, to pray for the cause of Gallegos’ canonization and to promote his fame sanctity among the faithful of this parish.

In the homily Eliseo shared something about Gallegos’ prayer life, his virtues and some anecdotes from his life and invited the faithful present to continue praying for his cause of canonization.

After the Mass, those present went to the parish hall for a small gathering, with cake, chocolate and coffee, where they sang Happy Birthday to Gallegos.

This small gathering was to share in community and give thanks to God for the life of Bishop Gallegos, just as his birthday was celebrated during his lifetime, uniting the community, and celebrating with his people the gift of life received.
