The Augustinian Recollect Honorio Calvo, who carries out his ministerial work in Querétaro (Mexico), channels the solidarity of its neighbors and the resources obtained with this Triangular Championship, a classic for the month of August.
The hometown of the Augustinian Recollect Honorio Calvo (Navaleno, Soria, Spain, 1948) has celebrated for 16 editions now, a solidarity Soccer championship to support the projects of the Augustinian Recollects in Mexico, in which this religious collaborates.
The setting is the Vicente Peña municipal soccer field and has the altruistic participation of the veteran teams of Club Deportivo Numancia (Soria), the Sporting Club Uxama (Burgo de Osma) and the Navaleno Sports Club. The latter had the support of his countrymen, which undoubtedly contributed to winning this 2023 edition, with two wins and a draw.
The digital medium Tu voz en Pinares (Your Voice in Pinares) has reported the event, which combines fun and joy for the reunion of neighbors and vacationers on August afternoons with solidarity towards the socio-evangelizing projects in which Fray Honorio collaborates in Mexico.
The party ended, as every year, with a snack provided by the inhabitants of Navaleno, with the collaboration of many neighbors who pay for, prepare and distribute the food. In addition to the resources that are obtained in the Championship, many other people make private donations.
This triangular charity tournament has already become a classic. during the month of August many of Navaleno’s sons, like Fray Honorio himself, take advantage of the Summer holidays to spend a few days with their families or in the houses of the town where their relatives, even though they may have migrated to other areas later.
Thus, as in almost all of rural Spain, in August the population multiplies, although it usually has 750 inhabitants. Forest exploitation and the timber industry are important in this Region of Pinares, including a zone of sierras within the System Iberian between the provinces of Soria and Burgos.
The teams of veterans from Numancia and Uxama selflessly join the party. In fact, the organization of the charity event gave them commemorative plaques in gratitude to both the participating veteran teams and the referee.
With resources from the Veterans Triangular Solidarity Championship, a soup kitchen is supported for the elderly located in Querétaro, the place where Fray Honorio currently resides as Prior of the local Recollect community.
Fray Honorio is also a good connoisseur of the State of Chihuahua, in Mexico, where he has developed a good part of his ministerial activity and which has also been a place of reception of solidarity resources with challenges of all kinds: passage of migrants near the US border; violence and drug trafficking; or the oblivion of the populations originating, especially from Tarahumaras, in the mountainous areas, with a very low index of access to public services in education, health or childhood.
