The Augustinian Recollect Missionaries of the community in the Parish of Our Lady of the Candelaria de Morón (Cuba) have just received an important shipment of medicines and sanitary material intended for the most vulnerable people and who have the worst access to these treatments and therapeutic materials.
The shipment came from donations made, among others, by volunteers and friends of the NGO Ayuda Fortaleza de Getafe (Spain), member of the International Solidarity Network Augustinian-Recollect ARCORES And she has reached Morón with the collaboration of young people from the Diocese of Ciego de Ávila participating in the World Youth Day 2023 in Lisbon, where they were accompanied by the diocesan adviser for Youth Ministry, the Augustinian Recollect Missionary Jocerlane Silveira dos Santos, Lane.
These young people made available to this solidarity project the free spaces of their baggage to transport a larger amount of material without requiring a payment special for said transport.
The Youth Ministry in the Diocese of Ciego de Ávila tries to favor the integral development and experience of faith among young Cubans, inviting them to be agents of transformation and builders of a society where the values of peace and love are central. For it organizes celebratory and training activities, round tables, dynamics, training in leadership, strong times retreats, cinema-forum…
The Augustinian Recollect Missionaries Sisters have been working in Cuba since 1991. They collaborate in the pastoral parish church, visit the sick, distribute solidarity aid, manage a soup kitchen, in a general environment of lack of resources.
Almost 300 young Cubans participated in WYD Lisbon 2023 and the Diocese of Ciego de Ávila, in charge of the organization, preparation and materialization of this authentic dream for the young participants. Bishop Juan Gabriel Ruiz was the official delegate of the Church Cuban at the event.
Morón is located to the north of the Province of Ciego de Ávila, Cuba. The year 2010 had around 64,000 inhabitants and their main sources of income derive from agriculture and the sugar industry, fishing and tourism, boosted in Cayos Coco and Guillermo with an offer of more than 4,000 rooms within 40 km. by sea distance.
The territory is flat, with small elevations of saline domes. The north coast is swampy. In Morón is the Laguna de la Leche, the largest natural reservoir in Cuba, with 67.2 km², which provides a large quantity of lobsters and shrimps.
Cultural activity is important, with an International Festival of Boleros, the Blue Silence Festival or the Aquatic Carnival, which attract a large audience.
Its parish church is the oldest building still standing in the country and is the only temple of the whole island with a crenellated tower and loopholes in its walls, for which it was even used as a military barracks in troubled times.
