Hope Center, Pauini, Amazon, Brazil. Augustinian Recollects. March 2023.

A guided visit to the Town Hall and the Municipal Chamber, seats of executive power and municipal legislative, allows them to know first-hand their role as conscious citizens in a democratic society.

Coinciding with the 67th anniversary of the Brazilian municipality of Pauini (Amazon), the students of the Hope Center of this town, a socio-educational project of the Augustinian Recollects and the Prelature of Labrea (the Amazon, Brazil), visited the City Hall facilities and of the Municipal Chamber, where the executive and legislative powers of the municipalities.

In addition to visiting all the facilities proper to the task of municipal government (offices of the mayor, of the Secretaries and of the councilors, meeting rooms, archives, plenary room), the students of the Center also visited a permanent exhibition with photographs history of Pauini.

The exhibition also recalls the ways of earning a living of the inhabitants of the town from the times of rubber exploitation to the present, when they have acquired greater importance in the activities of extractivism related to fishing and the fruits of the jungle, as well as livestock.

The students have also received information about the need for active participation in a democratic society in a conscious and responsible way, both when exercising the right and obligation (in Brazil) to vote, such as when using the tools that they allow effective control of political power and the demand for accountability.

The Hope Center, for its part, is also accountable, in this case to the institutions that support their task by granting resources by agreement with the Fund State Social Assistance.

Thus, the advisers Francisca Sidivane Ribeiro Guimarães and Keline Calistro Duarte visited Pauini until March 2, coming from Manaus, to monitor and evaluate the execution of the program agreed by Parliamentary Amendment 34/2022 between the Prelature of Labrea and the Secretariat of Social Assistance of the Government of the State of Amazonas, whose resources were used at Hope Center between August and December of last year.

These resources allowed the activity of Hope Center for its hundred of beneficiaries, boys and girls from 9 to 15 years old who were able to participate in cultural workshops, sports and artistic, as well as received computer rooms, with public funds.

All of this forms part of the complete comprehensive training program that the students from Hope Center, which takes place on a daily basis in two different shifts; thus, the beneficiaries who go to school in the morning spend the afternoon at the Hope Center; and those who have classes in the afternoon go to the center in the morning.

In all cases, in addition to the different workshops in which they can participate, which from music to computing, from plastic arts to embroidery or school support, the beneficiaries of the Center receive a meal that is made in the same Center, in the workshop kitchen.
