In the section Who We Are, we present a brief history of the Order of Augustinian Recollects.
Assembled in the historic monastery of San Millán (1908), the General chapter normalised the government of the Congregation, declared that its current end was “the apostolate in all of its manifestations” and ordained that the constitutions should reflect this ideal. Four years later, the 16th of September 1912, St. Pius X broke the bonds that still held the Congregation bound to the Augustinians, and declared it an independent Order.
Pius X’s papal brief put an end to an anomalous phase of the Recollection and reignited its corporate spirit. Interest in traditions proper to the Order grew and its capacity to synchronise itself with the orientation of the Church and the needs of society were augmented. In 1917 it established itself in the United States, and with great efficiency did likewise in Argentina (1925), The Dominican Republic (1927), England (1932), Peru (1939), Mexico (1941), Guatemala (1958) and Costa Rica (1963). The order was also present for a time in Trinidad (1901-1949), Puerto Rico (1927-1948), El Salvador (1958-1960), Nicaragua (1958-1988), Guam (1963-1989) and Germany (1965-1979).
